Enriched by Knowledge: My Academic Journey in Germany through the DAAD-Stiftung and the Max G. Huber Scholarship.

My Background in Environmental Science:

I entered the field of Environmental Science with great interest, driven by a desire to actively contribute to the conservation of plant and animal species, particularly in response to the environmental challenges and climate change we are currently facing

During my master's program, I utilized habitat modeling to identify suitable habitat patches and population connectivity of carnivorous species, proposing effective strategies for their conservation. Protecting these umbrella species plays a crucial role in preserving biodiversity. During this time, I also participated in numerous scientific conferences in Belgium and China, which broadened my understanding of ecological issues.

After my master's degree, I spent a month at Bicocca University in Italy, where I attended a course on Soundscape. This course highlighted how soundscape ecology can be a powerful tool for understanding and conserving birds and their habitats. These experiences provided me with unique opportunities for learning and gaining knowledge.

Given my background in habitat modeling for carnivorous species and my use of soundscape science for bird conservation, I was always keen to expand my research to focus on tree species, which form the foundation of ecosystems. I developed a particular interest in plant genetics, recognizing its crucial role in the conservation and enhancement of these species.

Although genetic studies can be costly, they yield significant results. The study of genetics not only offers insights into the adaptive potential of species in response to environmental changes but also provides essential tools for developing effective conservation strategies to protect biodiversity. In my PhD studies, I decided to focus on the field of plant genetics.

Acceptance of the Scholarship:

In January 2023, I submitted my scholarship application to DAAD, and in September 2024, I received exciting news of my acceptance. I cannot describe how excited I was when I was informed that I had been awarded the Max G. Huber Scholarship by the DAAD-Stiftung.

This scholarship was awarded to me during a time when I was feeling hopeless, and it opened a new path in my life. Without the support of the DAAD-Stiftung, even obtaining a visa would have been difficult and time-consuming for me, and the process seemed impossible in every regard. Thanks to the DAAD-Stiftung, I was able to enter Germany in December 2024 and begin my research project at Göttingen University in the genetics laboratory of Professor Dr. Gailing.

The team consists of individuals not only from Germany but also from other countries like Spain, Greece, Malaysia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Senegal, and others, creating a diverse and united group where members actively support and learn from one another, contributing to a vibrant and enriching atmosphere for scientific growth.

One of the most rewarding experiences for me was being part of this team, where I had the chance to work alongside people from different backgrounds, regardless of their nationality, religion, or culture. The friendly and supportive environment allowed me to learn a great deal from my colleagues, making it an incredibly enriching journey..

My Academic Research in Germany:

My primary research focus has been on Quercus Castanifolia which endemic to the Hyrcanian forests and has recently been classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. In our research, we investigate the genetic diversity of this species and identified its adaptive genes.

Leaf samples from Quercus Castanifolia were collected from the Hyrcanian forests in northern Iran and transported to the Göttingen University laboratory. In the lab, I focused on learning and executing the steps for identifying genes associated with environmental adaptations using SSR markers.

Initially, I extracted DNA from the collected samples, then designed and amplified the SSR markers. After that, I analyzed the PCR products using gel electrophoresis and entered the results into GeneMapper software to assess the size and patterns of different bands. This process allowed me to identify genetic diversity among the samples and ultimately determine the genes related to environmental adaptations.

My Experience as a Woman in Germany:

Living in Germany provided me with a new and deeper perspective on the culture and life of this country. I found it highly significant to witness Germany's deep commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. For example, at the University of Göttingen, I observed that every week they specifically invited women to participate in group sports sessions.

This initiative not only promotes physical health but also nurtures their mental and emotional well-being, fostering a sense of community and teamwork among women, and emphasizing their active participation in various aspects of life.

Additionally, while searching for job postings, particularly for postdoctoral positions, I noticed a unique emphasis on inviting women to apply. This stood in stark contrast to my experiences in my home country, where men often receive preferential treatment in many job opportunities. It was refreshing to see a system that actively encourages women to take the lead in professional arenas.

Living in a country where women may not always be prioritized, I could distinctly sense the difference in the confidence levels of women in Germany. Their strong sense of equality and participation in various activities is palpable.

This commitment to fostering an environment where women feel empowered to engage and excel in their fields is truly inspiring. The various programs and support available to enhance the presence of women in science and research reflect this country's strong commitment to promoting equality.

My Experience as a Researcher in Germany:

Additionally, the discipline evident in all aspects of life in Germany was very appealing to me. Attention to detail, commitment to responsibilities, and punctuality were qualities that were clearly observed in both work environments and daily life.

Working in such an environment was enjoyable, and I made the most of the experience of being in a space where these values are strictly upheld. Furthermore, the spirit of collaboration and teamwork ingrained in German culture had a profound impact on me. During this time, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a large team of researchers and witnessed how synergy within teams, where everyone supported each other, helped foster an atmosphere of motivation and learning.

This collective encouragement not only propelled individual growth but also led to significant advancements in projects. This experience taught me that teamwork not only brings about better results but also strengthens human relationships.

My Experience as a Student Living in Germany:

I tried to spend most of my time at the university, even on weekends, because the laboratory facilities and research opportunities available to me in Germany were excellent. I felt grateful for the access to these resources. However, in my last month, I managed to travel to cities in Germany, including Frankfurt, Berlin, Hannover, Braunschweig and Wernigerode and I enjoyed the beauty and diverse cultures of the country.

The People of Germany and Friendships:

At first, people in Germany may seem a bit reserved and formal, and it might take time for them to get to know you. However, once a connection is made, they become very warm and friendly. I felt so comfortable around them that when I left Germany, I felt like I was separating from a second family. Thanks to this opportunity, I built a wide network of connections and made German friends, whose relationships are very valuable to me.

Social and Environmental Activities:

One interesting aspect of life in Germany was the people's strong focus on social and environmental issues. Many weeks, groups would set up in the city center to promote veganism and encourage people to reduce meat consumption. I found these efforts very valuable, as they showed how much the people care about health, the environment, and animal rights.

Additionally, the extensive use of bicycles and public transport in Germany was impressive and commendable. Many residents, including students, preferred using bicycles or public transport instead of cars. This behavior played a significant role in reducing air pollution and preserving the environment, reflecting the sustainable culture and sense of responsibility among the people of this country.

Another noteworthy point in Germany was the serious attention given to recycling. Sorting waste into different categories such as paper, glass, plastic, and organic waste was carefully practiced in every home and workplace. This focus on recycling and waste management not only helped reduce resource consumption but also contributed greatly to environmental preservation. I found this commitment to nature to be very admirable and inspiring.

Global Village at the University of Göttingen: A Celebration of Cultural Diversity

One of the special and memorable events I experienced at the University of Göttingen was the Global Village Göttingen. In this event, students from various countries came together to showcase their food, clothing, and cultural traditions. I was intrigued by the university’s emphasis on this event, which created a space for students to connect with diverse cultures and appreciate cultural diversity.

This event not only provided an opportunity to display national identities but also allowed students to learn about different cultures and traditions, fostering deeper connections with one another. This experience was incredibly valuable to me, as it allowed me to encounter a world of differences and cultural diversity, and I had the chance to engage closely with other cultures.
