Scholarship recipients meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin.

The Dr. Angela Merkel Scholarship Programme for Indian Law students was established in 2011. The programme awards scholarships to six Indian graduate students each year for enrolment in a master’s degree programme in European Law at a German university. After receiving the Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for International Understanding from the Indian government in May 2011, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel donated the prize money to the DAAD-Stiftung to establish this new programme.

At the award ceremony, Angela Merkel was honoured for her “enormous personal commitment” to sustainable and fair development, good governance and her efforts to create a world capable of surmounting the challenges of the 21st century.

At the end of August 2014, nine Indian scholarship recipients supported by the DAAD-Stiftung had the opportunity to meet Dr. Angela Merkel at a photo session at the Chancellery in Berlin. The Chancellor, who strongly supports the promotion of students and researchers in general, took time from her busy schedule to chat with “her” scholarship recipients.

You can view the report about the meeting in the weekly video blog “The Chancellor’s Week” (at ca. 5:40).
